How does Islam describe the purification of the heart?

Islam, the purification of the heart (tazkiyat al-qalb) as a fundamental aspect of faith and spiritual growth. It is the process of cleansing the inner self from negative traits and cultivating positive ones to draw closer to Allah.

The Significance of Heart Purification:

The heart is considered the core of a person's being, the locus of faith, knowledge, and spiritual perception. A pure heart is essential for understanding divine truths, receiving guidance, and establishing a meaningful connection with Allah. The Quran states: "Indeed, the believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful..." (Quran 8:2), indicating that a pure heart is sensitive to the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) (Abdülkâdir Geylânî — Sırrü'l-Esrâr, s. V00/P077–V00/P078). The heart is described as a vessel; if it is filled with worldly concerns, it has no room for divine light (Muhammed el-Hânî — el-Behcetü's-seniyye, s. V00/P001).

Methods of Purification:

  1. Remembrance of God (Dhikr): Continuous remembrance of Allah, whether vocal or silent, is a primary means of purifying the heart. This practice helps to displace worldly thoughts and fill the heart with divine presence (Abdülkâdir Geylânî — Sırrü'l-Esrâr, s. V00/P077–V00/P078; Abdülkâdir Geylânî — Sırrü'l-Esrâr, s. V00/P124–V00/P125). The process can start with audible remembrance and progress to internal, silent remembrance until it becomes a constant state (Abdülkâdir Geylânî — Sırrü'l-Esrâr, s. V00/P077–V00/P078).

  2. Renunciation of Worldly Attachments and Desires: Detaching the heart from excessive love for worldly possessions, status, and desires is crucial. This involves severing worldly connections and distractions that occupy the heart and hinder its focus on the Creator (Muhammed el-Hânî — el-Behcetü's-seniyye, s. V00/P001; Gazâlî — İhyâü Ulûmi'd-Dîn, s. V03/P076–V03/P077).

  3. Self-Discipline and Struggle (Mujahada): This involves actively opposing one's lower desires, negative inclinations, and the whispers of Satan. It requires patience, sincerity, and a firm resolve to abandon what displeases Allah (Gazâlî — İhyâü Ulûmi'd-Dîn, s. V03/P061–V03/P062; Gazâlî — İhyâü Ulûmi'd-Dîn, s. V03/P076–V03/P077).

  4. Repentance (Tawbah): Sincere repentance for past sins is essential. This involves regretting past actions, resolving not to repeat them, and seeking Allah's forgiveness. Repentance cleanses the heart from the "rust" of sins (Gazâlî — İhyâü Ulûmi'd-Dîn, s. V01/P164–V01/P165; Ebû Tâlib el-Mekkî — Kûtü'l-Kulûb, s. V01/P311–V01/P312).

  5. Avoiding Sins: Persistent sinning can darken and seal the heart, making it insensitive to good and evil (Ebû Tâlib el-Mekkî — Kûtü'l-Kulûb, s. V01/P311–V01/P312). The heart is described as having a light that can be extinguished by sin (Ebû Tâlib el-Mekkî — Kûtü'l-Kulûb, s. V01/P199–V01/P201).

  6. Adhering to the Sharia: Following the commands of Allah and abstaining from His prohibitions is fundamental. This includes performing obligatory acts of worship and avoiding what is forbidden (Gazâlî — İhyâü Ulûmi'd-Dîn, s. V01/P164–V01/P165).

The Outcome of Purification:

A purified heart becomes illuminated, receptive to divine knowledge, and filled with wisdom and love for Allah. This state leads to spiritual insight (firasah) and closeness to Allah, often referred to as wilayah (divine guardianship) (Abdülkâdir Geylânî — Sırrü'l-Esrâr, s. V00/P077–V00/P078; Kelâbâzî — et-Taarruf li-Mezhebi Ehli't-Tasavvuf, s. V01/P022–V01/P024). Such a purified heart is described as being in the "first rank" of believers (Kelâbâzî — et-Taarruf li-Mezhebi Ehli't-Tasavvuf, s. V01/P022–V01/P024). The journey of purification is a lifelong endeavor, guided by sincerity and a deep desire to connect with the Divine.
